Date: July 17th 2015

Hello lovelies,

Are you ready to get down, 1980s style? We've got lasers, smoke, popcorn, SIX HOURS of classic MTV music videos, and one very special photo booth. If you want to participate in our trivia quiz show, please remember to arrive by 9:45pm and find Miss Scorpio near the stage. Drinks and movie DVDs are the prizes.

We've also put tickets on sale for our next event, the JaNk! surreal dance party with Sxip Shirey on Aug 7: http://www.jank.brownpapertickets.com (may be wobbly on mobile, but works from desktop)

And a special gift from a friend: you may recall that we co-produced Cynthia von Buehler's immersive Speakeasy Dollhouse a number of years ago. Since then, Cynthia's shows have grown exponentially, and have been running continuously to glowing reviews and packed houses. Her latest is the ambitious Zigfield's Midnight Frolic, which you've seen on this list numerous times. This weekend only, we have a special offer just for our list. A small number of FREE(!!!) tickets, if you email pj@PROTECTED with code "Scorpio." If you miss out on those, see the show listing below in ONGOING for a discount code for 46% off the retails price, also limited to this weekend. Go see it! It's a beautiful experience, and very much in the spirit of our own events.

Cheers,

Gemini & Scorpio and Sxip Shirey present

JaNk! dance (and album preview) party with Sxip Shirey

Friday, Aug 7th, 10pm-late, $20 Gemini & Scorpio Loft (must RSVP for Gowanus, BK location): http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html Tix: http://www.jank.brownpapertickets.com FB: https://www.facebook.com/events/1601085683492820 Past JaNk! parties video playlist: http://bit.ly/1JDgg2X Social media: #jank #geminiandscorpio

We're firing up the mutant harmonicas, sticking a mic down the mouth of a sousaphone and inviting you to a surreal live-music-driven dance party. Dirty electronics and live musicians, regurgitating old genres like early ska, early hip-hop, techno and house and playing it raw, glitchy and original.

Featuring: Experimental circus composer Sxip Shirey and JaNk band: Don Godwin on sousa, Attis Clopton on drums, Peter Hess on sax, Xavier Smith on vocals. Hip-hop brass band PitchBlak Brass Band. Eclectic beats by Joro Boro till late.

The evening will start with Sxip Shirey and his new album co-producer Don Godwin presenting a selection of never-before-heard songs from the album: newly finished the week before, and not yet released.

SXIP SHIREY http://www.sxipshirey.com With harmonica and megaphone in hand, Shirey taps the loop-sampler with his foot. Dirty hip-hop beats scroll out of the sound system, as his drummer kicks in a counter rhythm that unfurls a tight snare klezmer for a distinctly urban sound. Red marbles rolling in electroacoustic glass bowls, industrial flutes, bass siren whistles, regurgitated music box, mutant harmonica, miniature hand bell choir... A confusion of novelty, experimental and electronics, wild and entertaining. "Haunting" - The New York Times; "hypnotizing" - Billboard.com; "beguiling" - Time Out NY; "mesmerizing" - The New Yorker; "unexpected" - The Huffington Post.

PITCHBLAK http://www.pitchblakbrassband.com New York City Hip-Hop Brass. PitchBlak Brass Band uses the epic sounds of tubas, trombones, saxophones and other typically non-hip hop instruments in the spirit of The Roots and some of rap’s iconic live bands, to deliver an energy that samples, loops and breakbeats can’t always capture. Their blend of soundscapes and lyrical exuberance creates a grand adventure in listening, one that can hold the attention of music fans from across a fairly wide spectrum.

WORD/ART: Street Art and the Lower East Side, part 1 http://www.nycharities.org/events/EventLevels.aspx?ETID=8356 Graffiti and street art have been an integral part of the New York cityscape for decades. By the 1970s, the Lower East Side was transformed into a hub for many artists who used its walls as their canvases. These included pop icons such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Since that time, graffiti and street art have conquered the eyes of people worldwide, morphing from local urban expressions to vibrant artistic genres. Yoav Litvin, a photographer and native New Yorker, will speak of the current graffiti and street art "scene" in NYC and share images from the LES, other neighborhoods, and internationally. Litvin recently published his first book, the critically acclaimed Outdoor Gallery - New York City. Al Diaz, will speak about his experiences as an old school graffiti writer and artist in the LES. In the 70s Diaz was a graffiti artist known as BOMB1 and the artistic partner of Jean Michel Basquiat.
