Date: August 1st 2014

Hello lovelies,

We're happy to announce our first party of the fall: the return of the beloved 1920s speakeasy Swing House on Saturday, Sep 6. We keep meaning to do more of them throughout the year, so it seemed like a great place to start. Tickets are on sale already: http://swinghouse.brownpapertickets.com -- and we usually recommend presales, as Swing House tends to sell out.

Heads up for the House of Yes party tonight -- it's actually their Kickstarter-backer appreciation party in the last days of their campaign. These rockstar ladies are about to do something big and legit and wonderful in starting a proper circus venue -- we definitely suggest you give them your money!

Cheers,

A classic speakeasy party in a secret Brooklyn loft, with live swingin' sounds by vintage jazz bands, blazing burlesque divas, exotic cocktails, and the best electro-swing DJs remixing and reinventing vintage grooves late into the night. "Gatsby-era fun with a twist of new-school vibe" (The Village Voice).

The night starts with an introductory dance class for swing basics by Brooklyn Swings (who teach Monday night classes at our loft). Live music until 1am by Professor Cunningham and His Old School, a five-piece grooving New Orleans style band that's like Mardi Gras without the hangover. Plus burlesque fabulousness in between and remixed vintage beats after, until the dancing is done.

The Jazz Age never ended, it just got funky. Dress accordingly: "An event worth wearing that ridiculous zoot suit for." - TimeOut NY; "Corsets and top hats tweaked with studs and leather are totally appropriate." - The New York Times. Suggestions: vintage (1920s-1940s) with a modern twist, cabaret, burlesque, Weimar Berlin, classic Hollywood, classy, sassy, tailored, hats, feathers, sequins, beads. Effort required. Dress code modern-friendly after 1am for the electro-swing dance party.

EVENT: Flux Factory's 20th Anniversary http://www.fluxfactory.org/projects/homecoming In celebration of Flux Factory's 20th anniversary, we're opening our doors for Homecoming, an epic extravaganza. We'll excavate the layers of artworks, inventions, and aesthetic mishaps that fill our labyrinthine building. We'll reveal 20 years of archives, from the Kissing Booth Secret Tapes, to the long lost holographic family portrait. And of course, we're adding to our stacks with commissions of new works by Fluxers near and far. After two evictions, a move to Queens, hundreds of residents, a long overdue no-pet-policy, one shipwreck, two shantytowns, decades of beauty, wonderment, making the impossible happen, and only one stabbing, Flux is turning 20 and we want you to celebrate with us. Expect time capsules, a Going Places Doing Stuff revival (in three acts), weather patterns, the entirety of Public Broad Fluxing, a new and improved kinetic sound sculpture door bell, and a few carte-blanches. MUSIC: The Main Squeeze / Moon Hooch http://watermarkny.com/events/main-squeeze-moon-hooch The Main Squeeze is a raging funk experience born within the thriving live music scene of Bloomington, Indiana, and currently residing in Chicago, IL. Since coming together in late 2009 The Squeeze have managed to establish a unique sound and identity in a short period of time. Their unique ability to tackle and funkify such a wide variety of music makes each show a unique experience in its own right. Their live performances, which fuse soulful vocals, intricate jams, tight grooves, and ripping solos have helped them develop a dedicated and rapidly growing fan base in the Midwest and the East Coast earning them slots at music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, Equifunk, Electric Forrest and Aura. Moon Hooch: The reaction is instantaneous. It doesn't even matter when they're the opening act no one in the room has heard before — as soon as Moon Hooch starts playing, it's as if the room becomes a living, surging, pulsing thing. They call it "cave music": like house music, but more primitive and jagged and raw. But there are no DJs or manufactured beats here — just one drum kit and two saxophones. (Watermark, 78 South St, 5pm doors/6pm show, $25, 21+)

WORD: Demonically Possessed Cats: Illustrated Lecture http://morbidanatomy.bigcartel.com/product/demonically-possessed-cats-illustrated-lecture-with-dr-paul-koudounaris Does your cat do things like: spit fire? speak in tongues? levitate? shape shift? wantonly kill people for no apparent reason? This behavior may be more than simple bad kitty syndrome--your cat may be possessed by a demon. But don't worry, you're not alone. In fact, there is an entire history of demonically-possessed cats. Felines were once considered by theologians to be easy prey for demons, who could enter their bodies and wreck incredible havoc on mankind. And did you know: demonically-possessed cats are still believed to be with us today. Dr. Paul Koudounaris, author of the cult macabre tomes Empire of Death and Heavenly Bodies has immersed himself in the study of demonic cats, and will return to the Morbid Anatomy Museum to give a talk on this sadly neglected topic. (Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424A 3rd Ave, BK, 8pm, $8)
