Each writer reads the previous scene, writes a new scene, and passes it on to the next writer who doesn't see any of what came earlier. Beautiful madness ensues. For its second edition, Piper McKenzie will present one-night-only performances of three new plays written in this unique collaborative style, with results ranging from inspired chaos to eerie synchronicity all tied together by the unique voices of 18 hot playwrights, divided into three teams and staged by three intrepid directors. PUPPETS: BURIED ALIVE. a matchbox theatre
http://observatoryroom.org/2011/11/08/buried-alive
A frightfully funny exploration of our fear of being buried alive, and the curious phenomenon of 19th Century "waiting mortuaries." Tiny and interactive, it is full of dreadful discoveries for an adult audience of only 25 members. Constructed in and of matchboxes; images and characters slide out, slide through, pop up, and drop out of these tiny stages. Based on historical and medical facts. BURIED ALIVE is creatively anachronistic and plays with scale. Intriguing, hysterical, minute and very macabre. (Observatory 543 Union St, BK, 8 pm, $12, limited to 25 participants)

FILM: The Intergalactic Sportsbowl of Futuristic Awesomeness
http://waystationbk.blogspot.com
We at Way Station find many of your Earth customs quaint, charming and even, in some cases, downright intriguing: labradoodles, for example, or this thing you call love. Picklebacks? We can't get enough of those. But we just don't get the whole Superbowl thing. Instead of a certain football competition, Nasty Canasta and Doc Wasabassco present free screenings of several of their favorite classic sci-fi sports films - proving that even geeks may claim a place on the Field of Sport: Kickoff is at 5pm with the dystopian classic, Rollerball: "In the not too distant future, wars will no longer exist. But there will be Rollerball." Also James Caan. At 7pm David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone take the field with Death Race 2000, "a cross country road wreck" set in a fascist police state where the greatest national sporting event claims innocent lives. Postgame entertainment will be provided by Max Headroom, as the futuristic investigative reporter tackles "raking," a dangerous new
underground sport that combines skateboarding
with death. Football aside, we do adore the finer sporting-event-related customs of this planet: drinking, nachos and cheerleading are all highly endorsed. (The Way Station, 638 Washington Ave, BK, 5pm, FREE)
*ART: Park McGinty Open Studio
http://parkmcginty.com
Artist/sculptor/raconteur Park McGinty works with glass, acrylics, crystal, and a variety of other shiny objects whose overall effect is designed to "access your pleasure center and punch it repeatedly." The work is over-the-top drag-queen sparkly, but yet a balance emerges out of the chaos. In addition to his sculptures, Park's studio contains extensive collections of natural objects as varied and fascinating as his art. (330 West 58th St bet 8th and 9th Ave, Apt. 17K, 6-9pm, FREE)
FOOD/COMMUNITY: Grub
https://www.facebook.com/events/353282428023000
This will be our annual not watching the super bowl (football-free) Sunday. If you abstain from sports culture we offer you refuge on this day. Grub is a free and open community dinner held on the first and third Sundays of every month. We plan to be able to serve approximately 50 people, so it's first come first serve. There will be plates for vegans and vegetarians alike. About 99% of the food we serve is freegan, which means it is excess, ripe, nearly ripe or slightly damaged food that has been recovered from the waste of grocery stores. Most importantly Grub is about building a stronger and more supportive community, so feel free to come early and hang out. We need help gathering, cooking and preparing food for Grub (culinary skill not necessarily required). Volunteers are welcome to bring vegetarian (freegan and vegan is preferred) food and make their own dishes or help out with the preparation in general. Let us know if you want to be part of it, we'll be starting aroun
d 4pm. And as we're sure you always already do, please go out of your way to talk to strangers and to welcome new people. That's why we're here. (136 Lawrence St. 2nd floor, between Fulton & Willoughby, BK, 7-10pm, by donation)
VARIETY: Faceboyz Folliez
http://bowerypoetry.com/#Event/110587
Faceboyz Folliez pays homage to the days of yore with a distinctively downtown twist. Inspired by the famed Folies Bergere, a core group of downtown legends, upcoming newbies and special guests present a variety show of the weird and wonderful with an emphasis on bawdy humor and beauteous burlesque. The Folliez ensemble draws on their eclectic talents and collective experiences to take the Parisian pleasures of the 1800's to the diverse denizens of the downtown scene. Starring St. Rev. Jen Miller, Velocity Chyaldd, Stormy Leather, Amanda Whip, and Payje Flash. Short films by ASS Studios. With special guests Zoe Hansen and Ammo O'Day and musical Guest: Sean T. Hanratty. Produced and hosted by Faceboy, the Ed Sullivan of the Lower East Side. (Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery, 10pm, $10)

*MUSIC: Dayna Kurtz
http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com/calendar.html
"With vocal comparisons to Nina Simone and a musical style that pulls from jazz, blues and country, singer/songwriter Dayna Kurtz has found her best success not in America but in Europe. Kurtz started out as a folkie, but has expanded her influences over the years, creating a sound that fits in best with an Americana umbrella." (Barbes, 376 9th St. at 6th Ave., Park Slope, BK, 9pm, $10 suggested donation directly to band)
THEATER/PARTY: Speakeasy Dollhouse
http://www.speakeasydollhouse.com
tix: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/214593
A true tale of bootlegging, mafia, infidelity, and murder set in Prohibition-era New York City. From artist/author Cynthia von Buhler: "My grandparents came from Italy during the Roaring Twenties. They opened two speakeasies in the Bronx, one masquerading as a bakery, and the other one a secret nightclub. Shortly after Prohibition ended, my grandfather was shot and killed on the street in Manhattan. Nobody still living in my family knows why my grandfather was shot. Nothing was known about the killer, his motive, or a trial. My grandmother took these secrets to her grave. And so, over the past year, I have been researching this complicated mystery." Cynthia's medium for her story is handmade dollhouse sets and dolls, photographed for a book series. This immersive theatrical experience stages these events in a historic Lower East Side speakeasy set up to mirror the dollhouse sets, with the actors as living dolls. The actors aren't visually distinguished from the audience: dres
s the part and you become part of the family. Live prohibition-era music by The Howard Fishman Quartet. (Every first Monday of the month thru June, secret LES location revealed with ticket purchase, 7:30pm-11pm, $20-$250)

THEATER: Spectral Findings and Larger Objects
http://observatoryroom.org/2012/01/27/spectral-findings-larger-objects
The Hollow Earth Society is proud to host two new multimedia explorations of our intimate relationships with objects and ideas. Spectral Findings, a theater concert, reanimates Goethe's scientific findings on light and colours through Faust and Die Erlkonig. This experiment in chamber performance is a passionate and poetic narrative essay in which colored shadows and chromatic aberrations leave gentle souls prey to the work of devil. How do we see and what? In seeing, we fall. In falling we are transformed; visions shift. Mingling the intimate chamber music of Franz Schubert, scientific puppetry, and romantic devilry, one is left to wonder if seeing is believing, can we choose what to see? Constructed by Claire Moodey in collaboration with Jonah Rosenberg, Maxwell Cramer, and Abigail Lloyd. Larger Objects by Ariel Stess charts the non-journey of two dutiful gentlemen. As they reflect on the objects of their affection, they find themselves intertwined through painful positio
ns, misshapen dreams, and shifting memories. There is a woman too, somewhere, and she may need their help. The past, present, and impossible collide in this twisted, tedium. (Observatory, 543 Union St. #1E, BK, 8pm, $5)

Try a new spice. Teach yourself origami. Break dance. Here's what you do: Sign up with your project now, start it on February 1, and then, at the end of the month, bring something to the Fun-A-Day show. If you make something (arts, crafts, sauerkraut), bring that to the show. If your idea of fun is more experiential (competitive archery, noise concerts, dumpster diving) bring some documentation. ART: IN-HABITAT
From Flavorpill: Each of the artists in this exhibition IN-HABITAT interprets the concept of habitat, and the meaning of inhabiting this world in his or her own way. Gregory Curry's paintings refer to a post-human world (as if he's channeling Jeffrey Deitch ca. 1992), while Lisa DiLillo's images are evocative of the transformative nature of the nocturnal forest. Julia Whitney Barnes explores the power struggles between humans and the natural world and Kim Hollerman considers radioactive fallout, chemical seepage into groundwater, oil spills and suchlike events of toxic contamination. What does inhabiting the world mean to you? (thru 2/19, The Front Room, 147 roebling st. W'burg, BK, Fri-Sun 1-6, FREE)
