Date: June 18th 2010

Hello lovelies,

We were away at muggy, steamy, muddy, dusty Bonnaroo all last week, without so much as a charged phone, and so had to skip out on last week's listings without much warning. Sorry, all! We really thought we'd have internet access & time out there; what fools we were. We're back with a vengeance this week, though -- just see how much is going on this weekend (an honorable mention to the Mermaid Parade, Campfire party, and the "Play me, I'm Yours" project out of UK).

And of course we have our own parties lined up for next week: the amazing Manhattan cruise on a 1800's-replica tall ship on Saturday and the next House of Scorpio makeout party on Friday. The cruise is half-sold-out already, so jump on those tix. The makeout party should be a stellar one, especially since it's likely the ONLY one we're having on a weekend night. An aside on that: Friday night parties are more expensive to host, with higher bar & staff guarantees. We had to raise the price by $5 to accommodate that, but if you're seriously broke, use the password BUNNY RABBIT at the door to go back to the original (and future) price.

Cheers,

Gemini & Scorpio

Gemini & Scorpio raise the massive square-rigged sails of New York's only Tall Ship for a costumed dance party on the high seas. Rebuilt from original plans borrowed from the National Archives, the 160-foot Clipper City, with its masts rising 135' off the deck, is a faithful replica of the clipper ships that plied America's waters more than a century ago.

Our circus soundtrack is provided by DJ Barney Iller: a "ridiculous collectro" who flows flawlessly through Bmore beats, tropical bass, ethnotek, dubstep, jungle, showtunes, rock and hip hop, for a seriously effective, ultra party combo move. "Barney Iller has been makin peeps do dances they've never done before for many many years now...his sense of humor only serves to reinforce his sense of how to make you dance like you're feelin the holy spirit." - Whomptronica.

Expect wild music to delight your ears, colorful costumes to delight your eyes, full cash bar to delight your gullet, and plenty of surprises to delight your soul. Dress: circus freaks set sail; sailors; mermaids; nautical adventurers; clown fish. That Mermaid Parade costume is too good to only break out once a year!

100 cruise tickets available for advance presale, 25 more at the door, first come, first served. Please note: last year's sailboat mermaid party sold out in two days. We highly recommend buying your tickets early. Circus performers get in FREE - contact us to arrange details.

FILM: Rooftop Films: New York Non-Fiction
http://www.rooftopfilms.com/2010/schedule/15-new-york-nonfiction
New York City scratches, splashes, survives, creates, gets sick, dies, makes music, mourns, becomes activated, does its hair, and is reborn in a different shape to do it all again - or to do something entirely different. This year's New York Non-Fiction program traces this city and its citizens, both remembered and forgotten. New York has changed a lot over the past 30 years and yet so much is still there, under facades, behind trees, under layers of the new. It is still New York, full of struggle, of possibility, of hope. (350 Grand St. @ Essex, LES, 8pm, $10)

**PARTY: The Waltz Ball
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125874564107916
The Golden Angel Waltz Orchestra presents The Waltz Ball -- yes that's right only waltzes all night long. Waltzes that are from all over the world, dense in sound, seemly sweet but sometimes chaotic and always in '3'. Yes, it is a ball as well, so everyone is required to be in their most flamboyant, most dazzling, most Victorian, most risqué garments. We believe that people these days need a little encouragement for those romantic couples dances so we have also hand-made 19th century dance cards that will facilitate those budding waltz enthusiasts to share in the joys of waltzing with all on the dance floor. We also are bringing in four of the most cutting edge dance instructors, charming yet slightly twisted. You see, they are really clowns, they are at the waltz ball to be the charmers, the instigators, the fashion consultant--and yes, the dance instructors as well. ART: Daniel Merriam
http://www.animazing.com/gallery/emails/merriam2010.html
http://www.danielmerriam.com/
If you dream in full color, Daniel Merriam's paintings are a wildly-hued journey into the imagination. "In Merriam's watercolors, drowsy moonfaces, Victorian houses and the matic repetition create a childlike whimsy layered with meaning." - Art & Antiques. "The ... artist's stunning erotic, fanciful drawings of the primordial garden have earned him a worldwide reputation among serious collectors and connoisseurs. Working in the unforgiving medium of transparent watercolor, his artistical style is the product of solid technical skills, an illustrator's precision and storyteller's sense of adventure." -- EGO Magazine. [G&S note: we are rarely blown away by new art, perhaps because so much of it is post-post-post you-name-it. This artist speaks directly to our theatricality & surrealism-loving little hearts: think Alice in Wonderland meets Gaudi via MirrorMask. (Or, a more whimsical Mark Ryden.)] (Through ?, Animazing Gallery, 461 Broome Street, (bet Greene and Mercer), FREE)

THEATER: Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play

From Queen Elizabeth's England to Hitler's Germany to Reagan's America, Ruhl's exploration of devotion takes us on a humorous yet unsettling journey filled with lust, whimsy, and a lot of fish. (extended thru ?, Irondale Center at the Lafayette Avenue Church, 85 South Oxford Street
BK, various times, $22.50-$42.50)

ART: Key to the City
http://creativetime.org/programs/archive/2010/keytothecity
For centuries, the key to the city has been used to honor a city's heroes and visiting dignitaries. Now, artist Paul Ramírez Jonas has created a Key to the City that is not only a symbolic award, but also a functional key—opening spaces across all five boroughs of New York City. This Key to the City is intended for everyday citizens, who will award one another the key for reasons large and small. Once in hand, the key launches a citywide exploration of back doors, front gates, community gardens, graveyards, and museums that suggests that the city is a series of spaces that are either locked or unlocked. (Key kiosk open June 3 to 27, Times Square, Broadway bet 43rd & 44th Sts, M–F 2p–8p; Sa–Su 12p–8p; Locks available through Labor Day)
EXHIBIT: Where New York Began - Archaeology at the South Ferry Terminal
http://mta.info/mta/museum/whatsnew.htm
Before building the new South Ferry station, a huge archaeological dig was conducted. The site is rich with history from the days of the Native Americans and the city's first western settlers, and much was uncovered, including parts of Battery Wall and over 65,000 artifacts. A new exhibit at the New York Transit Museum Gallery Annex and Store in Grand Central Terminal will be showing 100 of these artifacts, plus documents and images that illuminate life in New York hundreds of years ago. (thru 7/5, New York Transit Museum Annex, Grand Central Terminal, FREE)

BURLESQUE: A Night at the Tombs
https://www.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/723515
Chicago meets TransAmerica in this new musical. While cooling her 6-inch heels in the clink, fabulous Bianca Leigh tries to make sense of how a skinny Jersey boy with dreams of becoming a great Shakespearean actor ended up as a high-priced dominatrix. Both hilarious and moving, Bianca brings to vivid life more than a dozen characters, from her disapproving mother to a sadistic corrections officer. Presented by Theatre Askew featuring original music by Avenue Q's Jeff Whitty, Taylor Mac and more. (Thursdays through 8/5, Bowery Poetry Club, 308 Bowery bet Houston & Bleecker Street, 8pm, $18)

ART: Andy Warhol The Last Decade
http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/exhibitions/andy_warhol/
The first U.S. museum survey to examine the late work of American artist Andy Warhol (1928–1987). Encompassing nearly fifty works, the exhibition reveals the artist's vitality, energy, and renewed spirit of experimentation. During this time Warhol produced more works, in a considerable number of series and on a vastly larger scale, than at any other point in his forty-year career. It was a decade of great artistic development for him, during which a dramatic transformation of his style took place alongside the introduction of new techniques. (thru 9/12, Brooklyn Museum of Art, 200 Eastern Parkway, BK, various times, $10)
