ART/OPENING: Vision Quest
http://observatoryroom.org/
A group show of neo-shamanic art. While the role of the shaman has traditionally been fulfilled by experienced elders in indigenous groups spanning culture and time, “VISION QUEST” posits that our artists fit the bill as well. Today, with more of us living in an urban jungle rather than a real one, it has become all the more important to figure out ways to internalize the lessons of nature: its growth, its brilliant bloom, its death. And in an age of digitization and distraction, of wire vines and humming screens, it’s no wonder we long for deeper, more sensory experiences of self - with all of its darkness and divinity. As such, each piece in “VISION QUEST” explores the archetype of the shamanic voyage, using the tools of paint, pencil, or paper in lieu of fire, flower, feather. Taken together this work represents a full spectrum of what it means to go underground and out of body; to go there and come back again, perhaps just a little bit wiser or, at the very least, more wi
de awake. Opening 7-10pm. (thru 2/21, Observatory, 543 Union Street at Nevins, Brooklyn, various times, FREE)

MUSIC: MAMIE MINCH & DAYNA KURTZ
http://www.barbesbrooklyn.com

Blessed with a remarkably rich and instantly recognizable voice, Dayna writes and sings deeply evocative and hauntingly beautiful songs that will leave a mark on you. "Kurtz sounds at times like her musical DNA contains traces of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, not to mention the world’s great cabaret singers." -- Paste Magazine. (Barbes, 376 9th St at 6th Ave, Park Slope, 8pm, $10 sugg.)

Who knows what it’ll sound like? Only one thing’s for sure. It’s gonna be nice. (1142 Myrtle Ave, Bushwick, BK, 10p - late, $8 adv / $10 with RSVP to mister@mistersaturdaynight.com / $15 at door)

FOOD: NYC Food Crawl: Falafel
http://nycfoodcrawl.blogspot.com
Known affectionately as the “Hot Dog of the Middle East,” falafel is a fried ball or patty of spiced chickpeas or fava beans combined with spices. Recent culinary trends have seen the triumph of the chickpea falafel over the fava bean one as a favored street food, but it is widely agreed from Egypt to Israel that the falafel’s deep-fried deliciousness can overcome even the widest rifts between countries and cultures in the Middle East. We will meet on the southern steps of Union Square and spend a couple hours sampling different versions of falafel. Falafel can be eaten as a standalone snack, but more commonly is served in a pita-like bread called lafa with pickled turnips, cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, yogurt, tahini (sesame seed), hot sauce, and sometimes even potatoes. No RSVP necessary. Bring friends and make new ones. Falafel scorecard, map, and team assignments will be provided. Go at your own pace and pay as you go. Come hungry, leave happy. (Meet on the southern steps
of Union Square, across the street from Whole Foods, 6:30pm, FREE)

He assembled a group of some of the finest young musicians in the area. The music of Zongo Junction is a blend between the hard hitting Funk and Afrobeat grooves, coming out of Ghana, Nigeria and Benin in the 60’s and 70’s, and Funk music from the U.S. The People’s Champions play music for the mind, body and soul. After spending years learning and living afrobeat, they've expanded their concept, mixing in jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, dub an
d samba to create new hybrids. The result is a passionate sound that will move you. The Devil You Know is a modern interpretation of the classic American short story The Devil and Daniel Webster about a poor farmer who sells his soul in exchange for financial prosperity. Using marionette and bunraku-style puppetry, revolving puppet stages, recorded dialogue and original music and multi-media projections, Ping Chong, Erik Sanko and Jessica Grindstaff will transform this Faustian tale into a hilarious and haunting mediation on lost souls, fool’s gold and democracy’s eternal promise for renewal. The Devil You Know is contemporary puppet theatre suitable for audiences ages 10 and up. (thru 1/24, La MaMa E.T.C., 74A East 4th St. NY, $30, Student/Senior $25)

ART: Slash: Paper Under the Knife
http://collections.madmuseum.org/html/exhibitions/485.html
The exhibition takes the pulse of the international art world's renewed interest in paper as a creative medium and source of artistic inspiration, examining the remarkably diverse use of paper in a range of art forms. Slash is the third exhibition in MAD's Materials and Process series, which examines the renaissance of traditional handcraft materials and techniques in contemporary art and design. The exhibition surveys unusual paper treatments, including works that are burned, torn, cut by lasers, and shredded. A section of the exhibition will focus on artists who modify books to transform them into sculpture, while another will highlight the use of cut paper for film and video animations. (thru 4/4Museum of Art and Design, 2 Columbus Circle, $15/Thur 6-9pm by donation)

ART: American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion
http://www.fitnyc.edu/336.asp
The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) presents American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion, the first exhibition to explore how the "philosophy of beauty" is allied to the craft of dressmaking. Each of the 75 looks on display was chosen to exemplify the relationship between technical ingenuity and artistic excellence. Curator Patricia Mears has focused on approximately 25 American fashion designers, ranging from the obscure, such as Jessie Franklin Turner, whose work dates from the late 1910s, to rising stars of the present day, such as the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte. Other designers featured include Adrian, Bonnie Cashin, Maria Cornejo, James Galanos, Halston, Elizabeth Hawes, Charles James, Charles Kleibacker, Claire McCardell, Norman Norell, Rick Owens, Ralph Rucci, Isabel Toledo, Pauline Trigère, Valentina, Yeohlee, and Jean Yu. ART: Tim Burton Retrospective
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/313
This major career retrospective on Tim Burton (American, b. 1958), consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, considers Burton's career as a director, producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator. Following the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work, the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects. The opposing themes of adolescence and adulthood, and the elements of sentiment, cynicism, and humor inform his work in a variety of mediums—drawings, paintings, storyboards, digital and moving-image formats, puppets and maquettes, props, costumes, ephemera, sketchb
ooks, and cartoons. Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics. (Thru 4/26, MoMA, 11 W. 53rd St nr. Sixth Ave, $20 sugg/$12 students, Fri evenings 4-8PM FREE)
