Hello lovelies,

Winter has hit NYC for real, with the first major snowstorm coinciding with our last week's Russian Baths party. And yet we had a packed house of swimwear-clad freshly-steamed revelers -- thank you, folks! Some even followed in the Russian tradition of diving into fresh snow right out of the sauna! Another amazing banya evening, hooray. Next one TK in January...we think.

BTW, the Banya owner has very generously offered to open the facilities JUST for G&S members post NYE, 4am-8am(they open for regular business after). New Year's Day at the banya is another big Russian tradition - let us know if you want to indulge. This is NOT a G&S party, just the facilities being open at the regular $25 door fee, for our members only. And with a free cupcake, too. Let us know your interest; we'll distribute a password if we're a go: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=215711839239

A few updates on our NYE Bootleggers' Ball: firstly, our VIP tickets are nearly sold out. Grab yours quickly if you intend to reserve a table. Second: we're running a Twitter contest to give away a pair of tickets. Follow us and RT our giveaway post to win: http://twitter.com/gemini_scorpio (we pick a winner 12/30; if you already bought tix, will refund). Also, if you've ever wanted to jump on board to help with one of our parties, we're doing setup Monday, Tuesday & Thur daytime. Some party tasks also available. Ardent volunteers get NYE comps. Drop us a line.

Below you'll find your weekend listings and the first set of New Year's Eve events. We'll hit you up with a fuller set early next week. Enjoy your holiday weekend, wherever you may be!

Cheers,

ART CLOSING: Art of the Crash Closing Party
http://www.fusionartsmuseum.org/ex_crash.htm
This year has seen the collapse of Wall Street turned into a full-blown global economic crisis, the less than enthusiastic interest in using “green technology” for business and personal economic growth and the “Cash for Clunkers” program which inexplicably trashed the “clunkers” rather than reselling them for scrap. 2009 has been the year of waste. Artists who work across multiple artistic genres such as painting and sculpture were asked to reference all of the above to produce art for this exhibit. Rather than waste the waste they have created timely contemporary art from the detritus of Detroit. This will be your last opportunity to see this timely and entertaining exhibit and a chance to enjoy a performance by Trystette and Bobbie Rae.Plus: screening "Automorphosis" - What if you could morph your car into a mobile work of art? "Automorphosis", Harrod Blank's award-winning documentary, looks into the minds and hearts of an inspiring collection of eccentrics, visionaries and
just plain folks who have transformed their vehicles into "art cars". (FusionArts Museum, 57 Stanton Street bet Forsyth & Eldridge St, 6-9pm, $10)

PARTY: New Year's Eve Eve
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=189747004666
Every year we cross a line representing the passage between "what we we have been" to "what we will be". We break our old habits and make resolutions to bring ourselves closer to what we want to become. This year we clench this passage with both hands and create a tradition that exalts both sides of this line and aptly name it "NEW YEARS EVE-EVE". This new day is for those that that are interested in making real connections to dive into the delightfully dizzyingly next year while holding strong to the things we've loved in the past. It is either continuing practice or a complete arrival destination. Come, adorn your face with shimmering beauty, hold a drink made with as much love as you are able to give, let your ears and eyes open sounds from the distant past and soon to be future, gawk at bowed backs of feathered bodies and politely turn to the one you've had stars for and ask them if you may press your moist lips against theirs. Expect to speak with playa lovers, world tra
velers, subversive leaders of the underground, high flying beauties and generally glorious creatives. (Page Not Found (Off Myrtle/Broadway JMZ or Morgan L), 8pm-late, $25 or $20 if you bring a letter written and addressed to yourself one year in the future.)

*DANCE: Nutcracker Rated R
http://www.nutcrackerratedr.com
After the last three years' sold-out runs, Nutcracker: Rated R returns for its fourth season, cracking open the heart of the classic children’s ballet to uncover drugs, sex, family secrets and all the other delights that make the Holidays so special. Little ballerina Clara is now a rebellious teen. Her disdain for her bourgeois family is challenged when her uncle Drosselmeyer takes her back in time to early 1980s New York. There, she discovers the seamy underground club scene and her family's untold history. Echoes of the original Tchaikovsky score mix with contemporary, unexpected beats to complement a range of movement from ballet to breakdance and burlesque. Ms. Harriell's interpretation is a dark, witty and satirical homage to (and cautionary tale about) the excesses of nightlife. "It sure isn't your New York City Ballet Nutcracker, but it's a hell of a lot more fun... classic elegance peppered with contemporary grit." -- Backstage.com. "Angela Harriell has created a uniq
ue and intriguing work that is at once an elegant homage to Tchaikovsky’s original, a sly send up of New York in the 1980s and today, and a showcase for her considerable talents as a choreographer and dramatist and her cast as dancers and actors." -- Stagebuzz.com. [G&S note: Angela & co have danced at many of our events, always turning out fresh, imaginative, colorful, top-notch performances. We urge you to go see their full show!] (thru 12/31, Theater for the New City, 155 First Ave bet 9th and 10th, 8pm, $20, $15/student)

ART: Hybridism
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=185764297492
http://www.MIGHTYTANAKA.com
Mighty Tanaka is proud to present: HYBRIDISM, the premier show within our new DUMBO project/gallery space. There's a growing creative movement that we've dubbed HYBRIDISM: a blend of both street art and fine art - a hybrid - as the raw meets the refined. It is the juxtaposition of genres, which both compliments and conflicts; the balance between these otherwise artistic opposites. HYBRIDISM, the show, captures a collection of both twisted fine art and underground street art in a span of mediums: vivid photography, collage, and rich oil & acrylic paintings on everything from canvas to found wood. From classic oil paintings of alcohol-blurred nightlife, a squirrel riding a two-headed goat, and a trippy diorama of the industrialization age, to street-style satanic mummies, tribal paintings on book covers, and graffiti-influenced silkscreens on newspapers - HYBRIDISM displays the atypical and the urban within one space. (thru 1/7, Mighty Tanaka, 68 Jay St, Suite 416, DUMBO, BK, M

ART: American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion
http://www.fitnyc.edu/336.asp
The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) presents American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion, the first exhibition to explore how the "philosophy of beauty" is allied to the craft of dressmaking. Each of the 75 looks on display was chosen to exemplify the relationship between technical ingenuity and artistic excellence. ART: Tim Burton Retrospective
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/313
This major career retrospective on Tim Burton (American, b. 1958), consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, considers Burton's career as a director, producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator. Following the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work, the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects. The opposing themes of adolescence and adulthood, and the elements of sentiment, cynicism, and humor inform his work in a variety of mediums—drawings, paintings, storyboards, digital and moving-image formats, puppets and maquettes, props, costumes, ephemera, sketchb
ooks, and cartoons. Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics. (Thru 4/26/10, MoMA, 11 W. 53rd St nr. Sixth Ave, $20 sugg/$12 students, Fri evenings 4-8PM FREE)
