Hello lovelies,
Are you as excited as we are for tomorrow? Can't wait to get this cold out of our bones with some hot sauna action. Yay! Heads-up: we're getting press coverage by MetroMix and Huffington Post. Adjust your outfits and party behavior accordingly (and yes, they've been told not to shoot anyone who may be uncomfortable with it).
We now have a FAB afterparty, too. Our longtime fave DJ $mall¢hange is celebrating his BDay with a nice l'il late nite blowout not too far from the baths, at our second home Brooklyn Sanctuary. First 20 folks to arrive from the baths after 2am get in for $5 with password STEAMROOM. Full steam ahead! (Details below in the Saturday section.)
If you still haven't gotten your tix, hurry! We've been seeing a bit of press attention on the party, and tickets are dwindling. About 20 regular admission left; late-night will still be available at door. Don't forget to use code "welcomeback" to get TWO regular price tickets for $90.
Cheers,
Gemini & Scorpio

SHOP: Degenerate Craft Fair

Just in time for holiday shopping, it will take place in the first three weekends of December at three different locations, and feature works of art generally priced under $50. Organized by artists Amy Wilson and Shannon Broder, this event was originally designed to help a group of friends weather the recession together. 'Artists have been really devastated by the terrible economy. So we wanted to come up with a way to help ourselves to make a little extra money by selling inexpensive versions of our work books, prints, multiples, whatever we can come up with,' states Wilson. From that point, the DCF was founded and has now grown to involve a whole variety of artists and objects, including jewelry, stuffed animals, CDs, stickers, clothing, zines, and even square inches of Detroit, MI. ART: Hybridism
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=185764297492
http://www.MIGHTYTANAKA.com
Mighty Tanaka is proud to present: HYBRIDISM, the premier show within our new DUMBO project/gallery space. There's a growing creative movement that we've dubbed HYBRIDISM: a blend of both street art and fine art - a hybrid - as the raw meets the refined. It is the juxtaposition of genres, which both compliments and conflicts; the balance between these otherwise artistic opposites. HYBRIDISM, the show, captures a collection of both twisted fine art and underground street art in a span of mediums: vivid photography, collage, and rich oil & acrylic paintings on everything from canvas to found wood. From classic oil paintings of alcohol-blurred nightlife, a squirrel riding a two-headed goat, and a trippy diorama of the industrialization age, to street-style satanic mummies, tribal paintings on book covers, and graffiti-influenced silkscreens on newspapers - HYBRIDISM displays the atypical and the urban within one space. ART: American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion
http://www.fitnyc.edu/336.asp
The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) presents American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion, the first exhibition to explore how the "philosophy of beauty" is allied to the craft of dressmaking. Each of the 75 looks on display was chosen to exemplify the relationship between technical ingenuity and artistic excellence. Curator Patricia Mears has focused on approximately 25 American fashion designers, ranging from the obscure, such as Jessie Franklin Turner, whose work dates from the late 1910s, to rising stars of the present day, such as the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte. Other designers featured include Adrian, Bonnie Cashin, Maria Cornejo, James Galanos, Halston, Elizabeth Hawes, Charles James, Charles Kleibacker, Claire McCardell, Norman Norell, Rick Owens, Ralph Rucci, Isabel Toledo, Pauline Trigère, Valentina, Yeohlee, and Jean Yu. (Museum at FIT, Seventh Avenue at 27 Street, thru 4/10, various times, FREE)
ART: Tim Burton Retrospective
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/313
This major career retrospective on Tim Burton (American, b. 1958), consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, considers Burton's career as a director, producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator. Following the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work, the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects. The opposing themes of adolescence and adulthood, and the elements of sentiment, cynicism, and humor inform his work in a variety of mediumsdrawings, paintings, storyboards, digital and moving-image formats, puppets and maquettes, props, costumes, ephemera, sketchb
ooks, and cartoons. Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics. (Thru 4/26/10, MoMA, 11 W. 53rd St nr. Sixth Ave, $20 sugg/$12 students, Fri evenings 4-8PM FREE)
