PERFORMANCE: Performance and Interactive Media Arts Ensemble
[G&S note: this listing is courtesy of NonsenseNYC, reprinted in its entirety. If you're not already on that list, we can't recommend it highly enough. There's frequent overlap with ours, but we also differ in unexpected and exciting ways...such as this.] A performance in the world's oldest subway tunnel. Meet at the southwest corner of Atlantic Avenue and Court Street, under the clock. You will then climb down a manhole to experience the interactive, immersive, multimedia performance as realized by Brooklyn College's collaborative, interdisciplinary MFA program. NOTE: This is one of the coolest places you can get into legally in Brooklyn. You can tour it on some weekends, but it generally costs twice as much just to go down there. We got really excited when we heard about the show and asked for more information. This is what we got: "Ok so not everyone wants there names to be listed, but basically it is a collaboration between 15 artists (students), and one instructor. I ca
n tell you that the first part of the performance involves an interactive dance party, and the other part is kind of hard to explain, but the whole performance is based on the subway. I hope this helps some, sorry I can't be more descriptive." (Atlantic Avenue Tunnel, Meet at Atlantic and Court, BK, 1:30pm, $5)

PERFORMANCE/PARTICIPATORY: Tuba Christmas
http://www.tubachristmas.com
Tuba Christmas was conceived in 1974 as a tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers. The first Tuba Christmas was conducted by the late Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first Tuba Christmas was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium. REGISTRATION: 11:30 am Rockefeller Center loading/delivery area. Enter northside of 50th Street (between 5th & 6th Avenues), east of Radio City Music Hall stage door, down ramp. ART: Tim Burton Retrospective
http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/313
This major career retrospective on Tim Burton (American, b. 1958), consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, considers Burton's career as a director, producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator. Following the current of his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work, the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects. The opposing themes of adolescence and adulthood, and the elements of sentiment, cynicism, and humor inform his work in a variety of mediumsdrawings, paintings, storyboards, digital and moving-image formats, puppets and maquettes, props, costumes, ephemera, sketchb
ooks, and cartoons. Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics. (Thru 4/26/10, MoMA, 11 W. 53rd St nr. Sixth Ave, $20 sugg/$12 students, Fri evenings 4-8PM FREE)
