Date: June 19th 2009

Hello lovelies,

Tonight is your last chance for a dance party in a real Russian Banya until fall. It was listed as part of the "perfect weekend" in TimeOut: http://newyork.timeout.com/articles/own-this-city/72053/your-perfect-nyc-weekend/2.html and called "epic" by BrooklynBased.net -- and we couldn't agree more. Yes, we'll have tickets at the door.

Two more June party reminders:
- Next two "Firefly" episodes are scheduled for Thursday, June 25. We're once again selecting the location based on RSVPs, so please submit yours ASAP
- Silent Disco is next Saturday, June 27. This is one of those super-special events we wish we could do more often. Imagine a huge Brooklyn waterfront backyard, with sparkly xmas lights in the tree canopy, fire pits to toast marshmallows + pop corn, and all this with the perfect dance party happening in your headphones via pirate radio transmission.

And, for those of you who've missed Swing House...Brace yourselves. While we aren't yet able to bring back SH itself, we are plotting something even *more* fancy, fun, unique, and glamorous. Save the date: Friday, July 17, for a one-of-a-kind party in a preserved members-only Victorian mansion. Info TK soon, we promise. But, wow, talk about epic...

Last but not least: trying to figure out a July 4 getaway? Our friends at PEX have cooked up something very special a short drive from NYC. See listings before the ONGOING section.

Cheers,

Summer-long screenings of Joss Whedon's Firefly
http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html

A rooftop screening of Joss Whedon’s (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse) short-lived but much-loved space-western series "Firefly." If you don't know the show, it's a great opportunity to get hooked on gun-slinging Chinese-cursing smart-ass space rebels who aim to misbehave. And if you are already a fan, it's a rare chance to see it on a big screen.

Two episodes shown every other Thursday until Sep 3, 8pm-12am, on a private rooftop (moves indoors in case of rain). $10 sugg donation, snacks + drinks also by donation or BYO to add to the table. No RSVP needed. Invite your friends, but please be discreet coming and going, as this is a private space.

This week: "The Train Job" (The crew of Serenity takes on a train heist commissioned by a crime lord. They steal the goods, only to find it is medicine that is desperately needed by the town) & "Bushwhacked" (Serenity is pulled in by an Alliance cruiser while investigating a spaceship that was attacked by Reavers. Simon and River must hide to prevent capture, while something is wrong with the lone survivor of the attacked spaceship.)

As internet video matures, we face a crossroads: will technology and public policy support a more participatory culture—one that encourages and enables free expression and broader cultural engagement? Or will online video become a glorified TV-on-demand service, a central part of a permissions-based culture? Open Video is the growing movement for transparency, interoperability, and further decentralization in online video by video creators, technologists, academics, filmmakers, entrepreneurs, activists, remixers, and many others. These qualities provide more fertile ground for independent producers, bottom-up innovation, and greater protection for free speech online. Join us for three days of inspiring talks, awesome video and film, open hacking sessions, parties, and cutting edge tech from around the world. Fri afterparty listed below. *****EVENT/PARTICIPATORY: The Mermaid Parade
http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml
A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events. Founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that also produces the Coney island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island. The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed. Each
year, a different celebrity King Neptune and Queen Mermaid rule over the proceedings, riding in the Parade and assisting in the opening of the Ocean for the summer swimming season by marching down the Beach from the Boardwalk, cutting through Ribbons representing the seasons, and tossing fruit into the Atlantic to appease the Sea Gods. [G&S note: do we really need to say anything? It's the Mermaid Parade, for pete's sake, and it's BEST in the rain! MUSIC: Scythian
www.scythianmusic.com
Rousing and raucous, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer, all infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility. Take a pair of classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar and the occasional funky accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a jazz percussionist, and you've got the ingredients for a show you won't soon forget. Their high-energy, adrenaline-peddling, interactive brand of music has one goal in mind; to get people on their feet and dancing. Their repertoire ranges from traditional and contemporary Celtic and folk music to the alluring and dramatic strains of Gypsy and Eastern European tunes, and then crosses back over the border to pick up some good old-fashioned bluegrass licks. "Classically trained Scythian is popularly considered to play Celtic music for people who hate Celtic music, but love rock." - Washington Post Express. **PERFORMANCE: machines machines machines machines machines machines machines
http://www.here.org
https://www.ovationtix.com/trs/pr/647455
From the creators of "all wear bowlers." Machines x7 explodes the world of garage tinkers and backyard engineers in a ridiculous theatre piece featuring the world's most complicated machines set to perform the simplest tasks. Following the formula, "the most of amount of effort for the least amount of gain," three chowderhead geniuses reach for the heights of mechanical ingenuity to reveal the depths of human idiocy. Machines x 7 focuses on a trio of fretful men (Rainpan co-founders Geoff Sobelle and Trey Lyford along with Pig Iron's Gabriel Quinn Bauriedel) who may or may not be brothers living in what may or may not be a postapocalyptic world. In constant fear of an unnamed and unseen enemy, they grow increasingly paranoid and wire their bunker with an enormous array of machines constructed from debris. "Men are really just boys with cooler toys. ...absurdly ingenious low-tech creations that hilariously brew their coffee, pour their juice, scramble their eggs and slice thei
r bananas." - Philadelphia Citypaper, Mark Cofta. [G&S note: $3 off all shows with code MACHEARLY until june 1] (6/2-6/27, HERE Arts Center, 145 Sixth Ave, $20-27)
