Hello lovelies,
We've just shifted our mailing list to new software -- please forgive us if you think we've added you to the list in error. If you want off the list, please don't mark us as spam, just follow the link at the bottom of this email.
Below you will find three invites for our June events:
- June 6: "Can't Stop The Serenity" charity movie screening on a private BK rooftop (location to RSVPs only; if you haven't gotten yours, it's coming just after this email)
- June 19: the new date for the Russian Baths (code SUMMER gets you two $40 tickets for $70 until 6/12)
- June 27: the next Silent Disco
In addition to the "Serenity" screening, we're going to host a series of rooftop "Firefly" screenings starting Thursday June 11, but space for those will be very limited. We're going to ask for a "show of hands" at the screening to determine, once again, which roof we're going with (so sorry, no address yet for that one either!)
Unmissable highlights this week: Jazz Age Lawn Party at Governor's Island Sat/Sun, Amanda Palmer tonight, Balkan Beat Box on Sunday, Sxip Shirey & guests on Tuesday.
Cheers,

OUR NEXT EVENT 6/6
===+++===+++===+++===
Gemini & Scorpio
present
Cant Stop the Serenity (CSTS)
Sat, June 6, 8pm-12am
Private location revealed with RSVP, $10 sugg donation, all ages
Details & RSVP: http://www.geminiandscorpio.com/events.html
FB: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=84219504932
A rooftop screening of Joss Whedons (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse) space-western "Serenity," to benefit Equality Now, an international women's rights advocacy group and Whedon's favorite charity. Also featuring "Dr. Horribles Sing-Along Blog," Whedon's musical-romp internet series created during the WGA writer's strike.
The screening is a prelude to a bigger CSTS shindig on June 28 hosted by The Browncoats of NYC, and to a series of semi-private rooftop "Firefly" screenings starting June 11, info on which will be available via the G&S mailing list. Look for The Browncoats of NYC at the event offering June 28 CSTS tickets and merch.
"Serenity" is based on the short-lived but much-loved sci-fi series "Firefly." Set 500 years in the future, it follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The core of the crew fought on the losing side of a civil war, and now make a (largely illegal) living on the fringes of society--and the star system--on the outer planets that refused to join the monolithic Alliance, which had won the war. The film, with its ragged Wild-West-meets-sci-fi settings and memorable cast of gunslinging outlaw spacefarers cursing in Chinese, has won multiple awards and become a cult favorite since its release in 2005.
"Scene for scene, 'Serenity' is more engaging and certainly better written and acted than any of Mr. Lucas's recent screen entertainments." - The New York Times
"'Serenity' earns director Whedon spot on sci-fi's Mount Rushmore" - San Francisco Chronicle
CSTS as a charity movement started spontaneously in June of 2006, when Firefly fans (the Browncoats, after the anti-Alliance rebels) organized 47 screenings of "Serenity" in four countries. The event name is a play on the movie's tagline, "Can't stop the signal." Since then, CSTS has raised over $250,000 for Equality Now, a non-profit which documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to stop these human rights abuses. The Browncoats project raising $125,000 for the charity in 2009.

And we're once again making our homemade infused vodka - yum!

See what happens when a circus troupe committed to a life of glamour and spectacle meets a comedy troupe dedicated to constant humiliation in the name of fun. Live music every night. BAM presents the New York premiere of the film "Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love," followed by a concert by N'Dour and his band. "Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love" is a remarkable film portrait of the legendary artist and humanitarian and the making of his Grammy Award-winning album Egypt. An extraordinary testament to his Muslim faith and an impassioned plea for a more tolerant view of Islam, the film profiles N'Dour with candid insight while providing a timely look at the complex place of music in Islam. This film received the Special Jury Prize at the 2008 Middle East International Film Festival. (BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, BK, 8pm, $20-40)
CABARET: Faster, Pussycat! Sing! Sing!
http://www.honkbark.com/current.html
Attack of the B-Movie Cabaret. Youll thrill to the theme song from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, take a trip to Xanadu, tremble in the face of The Evil Dead and ultimately succumb to Reefer Madness. Everyone from John Waters to Dolly Parton to the Phantom of the Paradise make an appearance in this paean to bad taste and questionable morals. You might even find yourself Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and engulfed in Green Slime! Hosting the ceremonies will be John Ficarra, whose genial cheesiness and death-defying facial hair reminds one of a taller, less wealthy Bruce Campbell. His droll commentary, blithe sadism and absurd sense of humor always conspire to please. Rounding out the crew is Dana Haynes, musical director and accompanist extraordinaire. [G&S note: via The Skint] (Don't Tell Mama's, 343 W. 46th Street (btw 8th & 9th Aves.), 8:30pm & 11pm, $12 + 2 drink min)
*PARTY: Forest Rave 2
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=69702692850
http://www.prospectpark.org/visit/interactive_map
A really special time in the woods of Breuklyn, this time with heat and a mobile sound mechanism. Disguised as a mobile renegade parade, we'll begin in one location and saunter in style to 2 unique wholly spelunkable way points; a veritable fun fest prequel to Kaleidoscope. Three acts will perform live campfire style: Ric Becker and "Puppets" / Maya Solove / Jigsaw Soul. The theme of dress is enchanted forest, so think furry animals and color and LED lights. Bring elixirs (in discreet bottles) and small foods to share. We will move, so be early or track your friends down. Cops and Parks Police: Technically you can be in the park, but the cops are really nosy and can shut this renegade party down in a second. So don't ask them for directions, but don't run away if they come towards you. Keep your LED lights off until you get there. If they ask where you're going, respond: "meeting friends" - don't give them anywhere to go. (Starting point same as the first FR: cross the big la
wn via path at the Picnic House in Prospect Park.)

Led and designed by some of New Yorks most exciting sound artists and musicians, the Soundwalks will take groups of 10-20 people at a time on an intimate journey of sonic discovery to experience our community in a way they may never have done before -- through sound. The goal is to raise money to support ISSUE Project Room, which produces more than 200 experimental arts events in our community each year. Your support is critical at this time as they work towards their move to 110 Livingston, a space in which they have the historic opportunity to create the first 20-year home for experimental arts in downtown Brooklyn. http://www.balkanbeatbox.com
Balkan Beat Box is steeped with an intense lifetime of research into their own non-Western roots as well as other cultures, collaborating with artists from Bulgaria, Morocco, Spain, Israel, and Turkey who draw on a variety of styles from around the world. BBB makes connections that politics often keep separate. Jewish, Gypsy, Arabic, and American are united by hip hop beats and dancehall toasts. BBBs musical hitch-hiking continues as they mix things up with dub and electronics, juxtaposed with ancient Moroccan and Mediterranean melodies. The bands uncategorizable sound gives equal weight to soulful acoustic timbres and digital rhythms creating a uniquely organic sound with electronic elements. "A magnificent mash-up melding music from every conceivable corner of the globe and its history." Chicago Sun Times. DJ Joro Boro spins. [G&S note: Keep Gogol Bordello. For our aural & dancing delight, we'll take BBB anytime. This is the only chance to see the band until next winter

***MUSIC: Sxip Shirey and Special Guests
http://www.myspace.com/sxipshirey
Ingenious, rogue composer for the Bindlestiff Family Circus and member of the Romanian gypsy punk outfit Luminescent Orchestrii, Sxip Shirey creates a lush evening of theatrical spectacle, provocative performance, and sonic sculpture from the souls of cities. Shirey's ecstatic melodies, unimaginable sounds and deep sexy beats paint a lush soundscape with stream-of-consciousness instrumentation on Industrial Flutes, Bullhorn Harmonicas, Regurgitated Music Box, Triple Extended Pennywhistles, Miniature Hand Bell Choir, Obnoxiophone, Glass Bowls With Red Marbles and a clutch of curious objects. Recently opening to capacity crowds on his seven-show run in Berlin, Mr. Shirey returns to New York in rare solo form. PUPPETS: The Outer Puppets
http://www.sicklittleproductions.com
The Outer Puppets is the premiere episode of a sci-fi puppet storytelling hour set in the future of low budget public theater. Three stories are told in one bizarre night of live Puppet Theater with live music. The first story, "Official Probe," explores the cavernous gap between what officials want us to know and what the truth is. The second story, "The Pet Light Bulb," finds a woman overwhelmed by her new bioluminescent worm and its strange needs. Chaos ensues when she breaks every rule in the owner's manual. The final story, "Digi-Lounger," propels us into the distant future when humans no longer have contact with anything except a giant digital butt plug. See what happens when an escaped experimental roach crawls on him. The show is hosted (and rudely commented on) by two junk robots from the outer rim (of Brooklyn). (Under St. Marks Theater, 94 St. Marks Pl bet 1st Ave and Ave A, 10:30pm, $10)

EXHIBIT: The Heart of a Woman
http://press.eharlequin.com/
If you've grown tired of rummaging through used book stores, looking for that perfectly cheesy Harlequin romance novel just for the cover art, here's an exhibit that's just for you. The Heart of a Woman is original cover art from 1949-2009. Seeing the work all together will provide commentary on the shifting image of women, sex and desire. (thru 6/12, Openhouse Gallery, 201 Mulberry St, FREE)
ART: John Wells' Ave Lux
http://www.honey-space.com
An exhibition of four 60-foot long scrolls by John Wells. Begun in his 20's, and still occupying his attention at the age of 60, the scrolls represent a life's enduring fascinations- a trove of motifs, ideas, and sensibilities that have maintained their relevance for the artist over the course of a lifetime, and remain as singular and contemporary today as the time when they were first created. The scrolls are built upon the existing grid of the drafting paper, which provides an underlying structure for the repeating patterns, text and images that play out over the scrolls as a whole. Created on a makeshift worktable, with only six feet of the rolls visible at any given time, the visual arc of the final works was something that even the artist couldn't visualize or anticipate until they were unrolled at the very end. Installed in the round in Honey Space's current configuration, the works are a true tour de force, defining their own sacred space on the western edge of New
York City. In 2009, John Wells revisited the scrolls, adding a border of text from the Treatise on the Triple Epiphany, a 2nd-century Gnostic text. During the course of the exhibition, John Wells will be present in the gallery, at work on current paintings at a table installed for the show, and interacting with the public. (thru 6/13, Honey Space, 148 11th Ave btw 21st & 22nd, FREE)

From the creators of "all wear bowlers." Machines x7 explodes the world of garage tinkers and backyard engineers in a ridiculous theatre piece featuring the world's most complicated machines set to perform the simplest tasks. Following the formula, "the most of amount of effort for the least amount of gain," three chowderhead geniuses reach for the heights of mechanical ingenuity to reveal the depths of human idiocy. Machines x 7 focuses on a trio of fretful men (Rainpan co-founders Geoff Sobelle and Trey Lyford along with Pig Iron's Gabriel Quinn Bauriedel) who may or may not be brothers living in what may or may not be a postapocalyptic world. In constant fear of an unnamed and unseen enemy, they grow increasingly paranoid and wire their bunker with an enormous array of machines constructed from debris. "Men are really just boys with cooler toys. ...absurdly ingenious low-tech creations that hilariously brew their coffee, pour their juice, scramble their eggs and slice thei
r bananas." - Philadelphia Citypaper, Mark Cofta. [G&S note: $3 off all shows with code MACHEARLY until june 1] (6/2-6/27, HERE Arts Center, 145 Sixth Ave, $20-27)
