Hawking your goods: Pick A Site
Do your homework:
Browse for free. And for your own good.
Do a background check. Some sites are members of as many as 30 other "partner" sites. Maybe you want your profile to pop up on Lovematesanonymous. Maybe you don't. Somewhere, somehow, all sites talk about who the heck they are. Click there.
Does the site's personality mesh with yours?
Are you seeing women in fishnets and heels? Or men in fishnets and heels? Looking for Mr. Right or Looking for Mr. Goodbar? Ms. I-went-to-high-school-with-you or Ms. I've-wanted-to-do-you-since-high-school? First marriage versus second (or third or fourth...)?
Is your profile limited by set questions you don't like? Canned answers? Word count?
Will you have to shake your couch down for the money? Do you pay per contact, per month, or do you just sign over your soul? Unlimited contacts per month mean more "bang" for your buck--but can also mean more spur-of-the-moment mail from spur-of-the-moment suitors.
Instant Messaging: What the heck is that little blinking light? Are they getting the message? IM doesn't work on all computers, and not everyone has a fast enough connection to handle it. Trying out the site on different computers will let you know what works and how well.
Won't you be my neighbor?
You don't have to commit to just one site, at least not yet. When you find a few sites you like, set up shop and see how you like the cyber-neighborhood. In virtual space, you can "live" in several places at once. Just remember, you'll receive mail at all your addresses. Can you keep up?
